My Dirty Little Secret

Last night we celebrated Alex’s birthday with my family. I hadn’t had company in a few months so I figured I was due.

I have to start by saying, I really enjoy hosting gatherings (that’s what you call a party after you hit 30 with kids). I love cooking, though I don’t believe in doing anything complicated. I believe in buffet style. And the best part, having company forces me to clean.

Hosting on a work night is always a challenge. Typically I would have taken a minimum of a half a vacation day for an occasion such as this, but now that I have a baby, I am hording my days in case something should pop up. This meant I had about 1 hour from the time I got home to clean the house (or at least the main floor of it) and cook dinner for 14 people.

I wish I had one of those little wands like the fairies in Sleeping Beauty. That would have made things so much easier. Instead I did what I like to call the SWEEP. This is a maneuver I have created and use anytime I get ready for company.

This stands for stuff, wipe, eliminate, elevate, and prepare.

The downside is that this closet eats things.
Stuff – everything you can in the closets

Wipe – the counter tops, tables, bathroom sink, toilet and
any glaringly obvious smears on the walls or doors.

Eliminate – pitch any papers, junk mail or anything laying
around that doesn’t fit in the closet

Elevate – if there is anything remaining that survived the
stuff and eliminate steps, take these items to the
upstairs bedroom and close the door

Prepare – throw the chicken nuggets in the oven, pour a
glass of wine and wait for the guests to arrive

Hilarious! I too stuff anything floating around into our bedroom closet and a file cabinet door. And follow with glass of wine.
